books on love
right now i’m reading eros the bittersweet by Ann Carson, as recommended by my friend cosi. it’s hitting for me because every few pages you’re gifted a little parcel of classics knowledge. and i’m really taking my time with the bits and pieces of poetry. as much as it is an academic deep dive, it’s also a very refreshing and serious meditation on desire.
i’ve picked up a copy of a lovers discourse by Roland Barthes (thank you, little free library of los feliz) and I plan to also read the art of loving by Erich Fromm (thank you for the recommendation, landrie).
the episode of Columbo starring Cassavetes. the other evening before the hurricane I walked over to Nish’s house and we put on this episode and i’m not sure if fixed the sour mood we were feeling due to the hurricane-related barometric pressure changes (you know, you can tell when your body wants you to go to higher ground) but I do like looking at this guy’s face and his outfits were pretty funny/ of the era.
Y2K tennis tank tops
I recently went camping in British Columbia for a music festival called active passive. Every time I go camping, I freak out because I just do not have great outdoorsy clothes that I’m okay with ruining with dirt, grass, oil and campfire stains. My solution to this is to thrift for my own Richie Tenenbaum - esque sporty tennis wardrobe so I can be a preppy grandpa in the woods. And then have more outfits for tennis. And be fine with sweating, tearing and ruining all of those pieces, because that’s specifically what they’re for.
PUR cinnamon gum
One time a friend asked for a piece of gum and when I handed them a piece, she said, “oh, you WOULD be the type to chew cinnamon gum.” Still not really sure what this means.
Simple meals in general.
I’m a pretty intense cook, and last month I was even making my own cheese and butter, which sounds a lot more impressive than it actually is (each takes about 5 minutes). But, I feel called to scale back some thing in my life to make way for things that are about to change.
Lately I’ve been eating a lot of rotisserie chicken with hummus. this brand is very good!
Stardew valley. i’m not sure if I made mistake picking the village where the ghosts come out at night, because I do not know how to fight, but i’m pretty addicted to this. end of the day this seems like a healthier dissociative outlet than instagram, at least. plus, I have a little gray cat i’ve named Spaghetti — and I keep yelling at my irl friends “don’t talk to me! i’m busy farming!”
Its creation story is also really inspiring to me. You can tell it was made with a lot of love and attention. I mean, he taught himself how to make music, so he could make music for the game. That’s so cool.
so much for online offline? maybe I can harness my love for Being on Conputer for good, like this, someday.
Death of a Ladies’ Man. perfect music for girl-rotting in bed. I’ve also just downloaded Apple Music so I can hear Joanna Newsom and Joni Mitchell. and I’ve really been into Radiohead lately.
