first thing,
here is a playlist that was made for the rainy weather lately. it is meant to be listened to in order, but don’t let me tell you what to do. it starts with “Never as Tired as When I’m Waking up” by LCD Soundsystem. which is fitting because I am indeed tired when I wake up.
this one is studded with oldies - Badfinger, America, The Doors - and some hazey alternative - Yo La Tengo, Stereolab - and some oddball frenchie pop - Julie Delpy ! but I think you will find it suits. it’s… delightfully lethargic.
GULLS IN YOUR WAKE - ON SPOTIFY
here in Los Angeles we are finally getting a break from the rain but it’s still damp and gray. perfect for doing absolutely nothing. yesterday, I found out I had been staring at the lit flame of a candle for literally an hour laying in bed. an hour! am I stupid? I was definitely not meditating.
i’ll say I was pondering laminar flow and pyrokinesis. and by that I mean well over a year ago I saw a TikTok of a girl who supposedly manipulated the burning of a candle with her mind, to make the smoke flow upwards in a straight line. and yes the chosen track WAS “My Girlfriend is a Witch” by October Country. I was sort of convincing myself I could do it, too.
anyways if you are also losing your mind like me then you will understand this playlist arrangement perfectly.
Other things I’m into right now. What are you into?
Explaining Deleuze with drum machines - wow I actually understand one thing about deleuze now?
Vivienne Westwood Fall 1994 - rest in peace legend. in this show they interview Vivienne quite a bit. love her fresh perspective and inventiveness - it’s inspired me to (try) taking up sewing :)
The fashion district in Los Angeles. my friend who is a costumer designer stayed with me this last week, and I had the pleasure of going along with her to shop for fabric. if you’re in the city and haven’t ventured yet, I recommend it. it’s fun to talk to the vendors and walk among giant beautiful bolts of sequin, satin, wool, imported French lace. Santee Alley did stress me out but you can avoid.
Paul T Goldman (tv show) - shout out to Ben + Avina for the find b/c this series is ridiculous and incredible. if you liked nathan fielder’s the rehearsal this will be up your alley, again playing in the murky waters of exploitation/ entertainment. Paul is real life Michael Scott and is so exhausting/ delusional in a way that is both scary and familiar.
Midwestern Zillow listings posted by Eric Erins - incredible finds
The ongoing updates about Francis Ford Coppola’s new movie. Jokingly but also sincerely I purchased a bottle of his pinot grigio to support the film-making efforts. As someone else said, if it was any other director I’d be worried, but because it’s Coppola, this is just a repeat of the Apocalypse Now production.
Leon Bakst’s costume design for the Russian Ballet. the museum of Russian art in Minneapolis is incredible on that note.
